What are some good makeup products that don't test on animals?

Please answer!

I need to know! What are some good makeup products that don't test on animals?
Well to start - firstly, please be wary of companies that say they don't test on animals - while many don't test the final products, they actually test, or pay someone to test for them, the various ingredients.

For an almost** complete list of companies that don't test on animals, with the criteria for 'cruelty free' being agree by a number of organisations active in this area, please take a look at this website:

http://www.gocrueltyfree.org/b_shopcruel鈥?/a>

Of those listed my personal favourites are:

Eyeshadow, eyeliner and nail colours by Urban Decay, especially if you want a young/dramatic look. I always have one of their palettes in my bag

Most products by Beauty Without Cruelty, especially if you want a more natural/grown-up look. Their loose translucent powder is one of the best I've used at any price by any company

Lipcolours by Hard Candy. Their nail shades are fun, but not, I think, as good as they used to be. Eyeshadows also nice

Skin care by Liz Earle - amazing quality ingredients for the price and great for anyone with sensitive/reactive skin

Bathproducts by L'Occitane - again, very good ingredients and lovely smells

Too Faced for a variety of fun/fashion forward stuff like glitter gels and cute kits (great for presents)

** I say 'almost complete' because that list hasn't been updated for some time and I'm sure there are newer companies who also meet the criteria. I always check with one of the pressure groups in the UK (which is where I am), I'm sure that an organisation like Petra in the US must have something similar? What are some good makeup products that don't test on animals?
I'm gonna guess you live in North America if you were in the UK bit by accident!

You want to look for something called a FCOD (Fixed Cut off Date) when looking for companies that don't test on animals. Unfortunatley virtually nobody puts this on their bottles and there is no law that says you have to say if you test on animals (Companies can put a bunny symbol on their products and it can mean nothing).

An example of a FCOD:

Urban Decay/Hard Candy have a FCOD of 2004. Not only do they not test their ingredients and products on animals, they make sure that their suppliers don't either. They also refuse to use any ingredients tested on animals after 2004, this ensures that no more testing on animals is required for any of their products.

Unfortunately I'm a bit stumped on US brands that have a FCOD apart from UD/HC. I think Lavera might be available in the US. The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) has a website listing cruelty free brands and I think you can filter it to show international/US brands.

Here are some major brands that do not have a FCOD so either outright test on animals or test products and/or ingredients (or get their suppliers to do it so they can say they are 'cruelty free') on animals.

Almay

Avon

Bare Escentuals

Benefit

Bobbi Brown

Bourgois

Shisheido

Palmolive-Colgate (they own loads so check parents companies of products)

Johnson %26amp; Jonhson (ditto)

Unilver

The Body Shop is now owned by L'Oreal, so whilst they have a FCOD dateof 1990, the prodits will go to L'Oreal, who have to (by EU law at least) test all their new 'revolutionary' compounds (like in their anti-ageing products) on animals.

MAC and Smashbox are often touted as cruelty free, but I am yet to received an email from either company about a FCOD.

Sorry if this is really long/boring, but I really feel strongly about not buying products tested on animals, and I hope this info helps! :D
several of the brands people have suggested either are tested on animals or are part of companies that do.

As a couple of other people have said, please check out the various cruelty-free websites for definitive answers

Personally, I really like almost all of Urban Decay's stuff, although I do know some people get sensitive to it. Hard Candy is much on the same lines and has some excellent quality items for the money
